Discussion
Situation
A company from Germany produces vinegar, oils, sauces, liqueurs, wines, and schnapps. The focus is on the production of alcoholic beverages. The resulting wastewater has a COD of almost 30,000 mg/l. The company wanted a reliable wastewater treatment plant for the beverage industry to indirectly discharge the wastewater into the municipal wastewater treatment plant.
Problem
The challenge in this project was to reduce the COD from almost 30,000 mg/l to less than 1,400 mg/l. This is the guideline value for being allowed to discharge the wastewater into the municipal sewage treatment plant without additional pollution fees. This is the guideline value for being allowed to discharge the wastewater into the municipal sewage treatment plant without additional pollution charges. In addition, the wastewater is produced very irregularly. This leads to inflow peaks, which must first be buffered before the wastewater enters the actual treatment system.
Solution
The wastewater treatment plant for the beverage industry consisted of a fat separator, aerated buffer, ClearFox® FBBR module, ClearFox® lamella clarifier and a ClearFox® sludge screw press. The ideal design for this was a hybrid of below ground and above ground installation. On the one hand, the client decided to install the grease separator and the buffer below ground in concrete tanks, and on the other hand, to install the fixed-bed biological reactor and the lamella clarifier above ground in sea containers.
At the beginning of the project, the company provided a wastewater sample, which PPU Umwelttechnik GmbH analysed in its in-house laboratory. The ClearFox® team then prepared a comprehensive offer. After production, the delivery, installation and commissioning took place, which was limited to a few days.
The fat separator first separates the oil that gets into the wastewater during sauce production. Then the wastewater enters the aerated buffer. This catches the inflow peaks and mixes the wastewater, thus preventing the solids from settling. The wastewater then enters the fixed-bed container, where biological degradation of the COD takes place. The size of the fixed-bed module and the aeration intervals are adapted to the COD values of less than 1,400 mg/l to be achieved. A lamella clarifier then separates the sludge from the clear water. A sludge screw press reduces the water content of the sludge to minimise disposal costs.
It was important to the customer to have a reliable, but also maintenance-friendly wastewater treatment plant for the beverage industry. After instruction, his staff can also make simple adjustments to the cleaning performance. For further concerns, the ClearFox® service team is available for advice.
