Discussion

Situation

A food producer from Austria processes pork into ham and sells it nationwide. The pigs arrive at the main plant from regional farmers, where they are slaughtered, cut up and processed into ham. The company also has its own packaging line.

The entire processing chain produces around 300 cubic metres of wastewater every day. This comes from various sources: Vehicle cleaning, slaughtering, meat processing, refrigeration, and the packaging line. As hygiene is particularly important in meat processing plants, most of the wastewater is generated during cleaning processes.

Problem

The challenge in this project was to determine the correct treatment process. The customer commissioned both an independent laboratory and a wastewater analysis in PPU Umwelttechnik GmbH’s in-house laboratory. The Bayreuth-based company’s jar test went beyond the mere determination of contamination. It analysed various precipitants and flocculants to ensure ideal treatment using dissolved air flotation.

Solution

The ideal solution for this project was a ClearFox® DAF. As the customer has very little space within its premises, it opted for a containerised wastewater treatment plant. This is weatherproof and can be installed on the company’s outdoor premises. The container houses two DAF reactors, each of which can be fed with 7.5 m³/hour. The reason for the double DAF solution is regular inspection and maintenance, which can take place with one reactor at a time while the other continues to treat the wastewater.

This project was subsidised by the European Union. The aim of the funding is to maximise the recycling rate of the wastewater produced. As sludge – known as flotate – is produced in addition to the clear water, the University of Vienna is part of the project. It is investigating the possibilities of extracting biogas from the flotate.

PPU Umwelttechnik GmbH was responsible for the complete planning and construction of the containerised DAF. It manufactured the complete system at the main production site in Bayreuth, tested it and shipped it to Austria. There, the ClearFox® employees put the system into operation and instructed the staff on site. This only took two days. The company received the subsidy, so the purchase of a ClearFox® DAF was worthwhile for them in particular.
