Discussion
Situation
A resort on the British Virgin Islands offers 31 guest rooms with a restaurant, a small in-house bakery, a pool, and a staff area. Around 30 cubic metres of wastewater flows from these sources every day. This is mainly sewage, but also wastewater from the bakery. To be able to discharge this directly into the Caribbean Sea, the resort asked PPU Umwelttechnik GmbH for a wastewater treatment plant.
Problem
The first challenge is the location of the resort. As it is rather remote in a natural environment, major remodelling projects were out of the question. The customer wanted a treatment system that was easy to transport, quick to set up and simple to connect.
The second challenge was the bakery’s wastewater content. As a lot of sugar, yeast and flour are processed there, these are mixed into the wastewater. This leads to a slightly increased BOD.
Solution
The ideal treatment system is a ClearFox® containerised wastewater treatment plant with fixed bed technology. This has two advantages: Firstly, it offers a small and compact footprint, and secondly, it can biologically treat the organically contaminated wastewater.
The resort can only be reached by car or truck. As the ClearFox® containerised wastewater treatment plants comply with international standards, they are designed for transport by truck worldwide. In addition, the 20-foot HC ISO Sea container offers a compact footprint. As the resort is located directly by the sea, there is very little space to set up the wastewater treatment plant. The ClearFox® containerised wastewater treatment plant was therefore the ideal solution.
The fixed bed technology installed in it is particularly robust and reliably breaks down organic contaminants in the wastewater. As the wastewater produced is not only wastewater, but also mixed water from a bakery, the organic load is also increased. A stable biological lawn forms on the fixed bed material, which can cope excellently with fluctuating dirt loads as well as overloads and underloads. The containerised wastewater treatment plant has been in operation since September 2023. The installation, commissioning and training of the employees was limited to two working days.
